Home of Robert Burns
Dumfries was founded as a Royal Burgh in 1186 on the east side of the lowest crossing point of the River Nith. It is the largest town in Dumfries and Galloway and is most famous for being home to late and famous poet - Robert Burns. The town of Dumfries is steeped in the history and heritage of Robert Burns and boasts not only the Mausoleum and final resting place of many of Burns, but many other landmarks relating to the poet. It may well be said that, in Dumfries, Robert Burns suffered his severest health problems yet he also created his finest works.

Dumfries has many of the amenities you would expect from a main town centre including high street shops and restaurants. You can also visit DGone which has modern sports facilities should you wish to use a fully equipped gym or swimming pool.
In terms of visitor attractions in the town centre itself, why not visit the Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura which offers fascinating panoramic views of the town.
